Turning Pro is Steven Pressfield’s follow up to The War of Art. He highlights the difference between the amateur and the Professional. It is an excellent follow-up. Turning Pro – becoming a professional is about grinding. It is about suffering for your art; your CRAFT. He quotes the Greek poet and mercenary, Archilochus: “Be brave, my heart. Plant your feet and square your shoulders to the enemy. Meet him among the man-killing spears. Hold your ground.” You don’t really need Turning Pro. You could easily carry The War of Art around with you content that it will serve as your guidebook but Turning Pro provides a lot of supplemental guidance.

This is a TOP 10 book for me. Pressfield is one of my favorite writers. His (historical) fiction writing was one of the catalysts that resulted in me going back to school to complete a degree in (Ancient) History. In this work, Pressfield names the nagging, critical voice in our heads “The Resistance.” You will read this again and again. In fact, stop reading this and go buy your own copy.

I can’t remember which Seth Godin book or podcast or blog posting talked about schools and the school system being designed to produce cogs not leaders. Tribes is about leadership. Its about being a change leader. I have the term “change agent” – “leader” is better conceptually. He name checks Kevin Kelley and his “1000 True Fans” – which is a must read.

This:

“Great leaders are able to reflect the light onto their teams, their tribes. Great leaders don’t want the attention, but they use it. They use it to unite the tribe and to reinforce its sense of purpose.”

You need to be moving forward, always. Learning. Improving. Adjusting. Adapting. Be an artist. Hustle. Don't stop. You are responsible for your happiness, health and fulfilling work and wealth.

Illuminating. Terrifying. Jeremy Scahill, who wrote a book about the private military company - Blackwater, takes us inside America’s new covert wars. The foot soldiers in these battles operate globally and inside the United States with orders from the White House to do whatever is necessary to hunt down, capture or kill individuals designated by the president as enemies. Drawn from the ranks of the Navy SEALs, Delta Force, former Blackwater and other private security contractors, the CIA’s Special Activities Division and the Joint Special Operations Command ( JSOC), these elite soldiers operate worldwide, with thousands of secret commandos working in more than one hundred countries. Funded through “black budgets,” Special Operations Forces conduct missions in denied areas, engage in targeted killings, snatch and grab individuals and direct drone, AC-130 and cruise missile strikes. While the Bush administration deployed these ghost militias, President Barack Obama has expanded their operations and given them new scope and legitimacy. Dirty Wars follows the consequences of the declaration that “the world is a battlefield,” as Scahill uncovers the most important foreign policy story of our time. From Afghanistan to Yemen, Somalia and beyond, Scahill reports from the frontlines in this high-stakes investigation and explores the depths of America’s global killing machine. He goes beneath the surface of these covert wars, conducted in the shadows, outside the range of the press, without effective congressional oversight or public debate. And, based on unprecedented access, Scahill tells the chilling story of an American citizen marked for assassination by his own government. As US leaders draw the country deeper into conflicts across the globe, setting the world stage for enormous destabilization and blowback, Americans are not only at greater risk—we are changing as a nation. Scahill unmasks the shadow warriors who prosecute these secret wars and puts a human face on the casualties of unaccountable violence that is now official policy: victims of night raids, secret prisons, cruise missile attacks and drone strikes, and whole classes of people branded as “suspected militants.” Through his brave reporting, Scahill exposes the true nature of the dirty wars the United States government struggles to keep hidden.

This book looks at adjusting how we teach and learn. It leads off by talking about John Wooden. So ... they had me at hello. Lots of notes on this one. As I make my way towards wanting to teach, I will be re-visiting this book. It explores the idea that practice--not games--makes champions, presents "how to" rules for improvement in virtually every performance of life, covering such topics as rethinking practice, using feedback, and making new skills stick. Not just for educators.

This is a good read. Phil Jackson applies the philosophy that everyone is a leader. He also subscribes to the idea of group problem solving. He applies Zen and Native American teachings about mindfulness and letting go to leadership and teamwork.

Now this is the Law of the Jungle—as old and true as the sky; And the Wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the Wolf that shall break must die. As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back— For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.

Disclaimer: I love history. I enjoy reading about World War Two. This is a fantastic trilogy. I started with the last book first. The final volume of the trilogy chronicles the Allied victory in Western Europe, from the brutal struggles in Normandy and at the Battle of the Bulge to the freeing of Paris. I love the way Atkinson approached this project. He weaves together his chronicle from people on both sides of the conflict and from people at different service levels. It provides an almost 360 degree perspective.
